Metallic glass is a solid metallic material, typically an alloy, that has been processed to bypass the normal crystallization phase when it cools from a liquid. The manufacturing process involves extremely rapid cooling of a molten metal alloy—often at a rate of millions of degrees per second. This “freezes” the atoms in a random, disordered state before they have a chance to form a crystalline lattice. The result is a material that looks like a metal (opaque and shiny) but behaves like a glass in its lack of a crystal structure.

While early versions were limited to thin ribbons or foils, modern advancements have led to the creation of Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs), which are thick enough to be used in various commercial applications.

Key Features and Properties

Metallic glass is celebrated for its exceptional and often contradictory properties:

  • Extreme Strength and Hardness: It is significantly stronger and harder than conventional steel alloys. This is due to the absence of “dislocations” or imperfections in its atomic structure, which are common weak points in crystalline metals.
  • High Elasticity: Unlike regular metals, which deform permanently after a certain amount of stress, metallic glass can bend and return to its original shape with a much higher degree of elasticity. This property makes it exceptionally resilient.
  • Corrosion Resistance: The amorphous structure prevents the formation of grain boundaries, which are common starting points for corrosion in crystalline metals. This gives metallic glass a high resistance to rust and chemical degradation, often surpassing that of stainless steel.
  • Unique Magnetic Properties: Some metallic glasses (particularly those with iron or cobalt) exhibit excellent soft magnetic properties. They can be easily magnetized and demagnetized, leading to very low energy loss.
  • High Wear Resistance: Its extreme hardness makes it highly resistant to wear and tear, making it an ideal material for surface coatings and precision parts.
  • Precision Moldability: Because it solidifies without a change in volume, metallic glass can be molded with incredible precision, allowing for the creation of complex, high-tolerance parts using a single injection molding process.
