How to Choose the Right Ring Light for Your Videos
Good light does more for your videos than a new phone. A ring light spreads soft, even light across your face, removes harsh shadows and adds that round sparkle in your eyes. Here is what to look at before you buy one.
1. Pick the right size
For selfies, makeup, live sales and video calls, a 10-inch (26cm) ring is the sweet spot. It is big enough to light your face evenly and small enough for a desk or a small room. Bigger rings (14 to 18 inches) suit full-body shots and studio work, but they need more space and more power.
2. Look for adjustable colour and brightness
Most good ring lights give you three modes: cool white, warm yellow and a natural mix. Cool light looks crisp in the daytime, warm light is kinder to skin at night. Being able to dim the light matters just as much. Too bright and your face looks flat and shiny.
If you make music videos, vlogs or TikToks, an RGB ring light such as the MJ26 RGB LED Ring Light also gives you coloured light for mood and effects.
3. Choose USB power
USB-powered lights run from a laptop, a phone charger or a power bank. That last one matters in Nigeria: with a charged power bank, you can keep recording when NEPA takes the light.
4. Check the stand and phone holder
A tripod stand lets you set the height, and a rotating phone clamp lets you switch between portrait (for Reels and TikTok) and landscape (for YouTube). If you sell online, a stand that holds two phones, like our Dual Phone Holder Stand with LED Fill Light, lets you go live on one phone and read comments on the other.
Quick setup tip
Place the ring light directly in front of you, with the phone in the middle of the ring at eye level. Face a plain wall or curtain, and turn off overhead lights that throw shadows from above.
